EV CHARGING STATION FAQ

What do I need to know about EV Charging solutions?

Different types of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) provide different speeds of charging. Some charging stations have advanced features such as smart metering, cellular capability and network connectivity, while others are more basic. Globally, the number of electric vehicle networks is increasing to provide a system of publicly accessible charging stations to support the mass adoption of electric vehicles.  With AC and DC charging solutions for every electric vehicle, a modular and adaptable infrastructure makes allowance for customised solutions.

Can any electrician install EV charger?

No. EV chargers may lose their warranty if they are not installed by an experienced and certified installer to ensure your charger is properly and safely fitted and that it complies with  all regulations.

Do all EVs use the same charger?

All the EVs in Singapore use the same type of plug for alternate-current charging, and the majority use the same plug for fast direct-current charging. However, charging may vary in other countries.

Who can install an EV charger?

To  ensure proper installation of the EV chargers, you are required to engage a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) to certify the fitness of the installation. This is included in the Eigen installation service.

Can I install my EV charger outdoors?

Electric vehicle charging stations are flexible devices that can be installed outdoors. The port where you plug in the cord to your car’s battery is designed to flush water and drain when charging an EV. Similarly, the cord itself is made to repel water, and once your charging system is connected to your car’s battery port, a watertight seal is created, ensuring a safe and reliable charge, even in the harshest of conditions.

How does an EV charger work?

There are two types of electrical currents important when it comes to EV charging: Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC). The electricity that comes from the grid and is accessible through the domestic sockets in your home or office is always AC, while the electricity that is stored in batteries or used in the actual power circuitry inside electric devices is DC. For an AC charger, when you plug your EV into the socket, it will always receive alternating current. However, because batteries store direct current, a conversion will take place inside your EV through your car’s converter. On the other hand, a DC charger converts the AC power before it enters your vehicle battery, bypassing the car’s converter, thereby allowing for faster charging.

What EV charger do I need?

An EV  charger should be selected based on the following factors: your EV’s recommended amperage or current, the charging level that works with your car, and your home's available electrical capacity.

What EV charger to buy?

EV charging is divided into 3 levels; level 1, level 2, and level 3. The higher the charging level, the higher the power output and the faster it will charge your electric car. The level of EV charging you can have is subjected to your building’s available capacity.

How to install an EV charger at home?

The easiest way to find an EV charging installer is to use an installer recommended by your EV charger brand. The good news is: Eigen is a listed preferred installer for most EV charger brands in Singapore.

What is OCPP?

Open Charge Point Protocol. The standard protocol to connect the charging station to a charge point operator. This allows the exchange of data between the charging station and the backend system of the charge point operator.

What is OCPI?

Open Charge Point Interface. An open protocol designed to share charging stations with other charge point operators, ie. Roaming between various EV charging networks.

How do I connect my charger to Eigen's CSMS?

The OCPP v1.6 compliant charger would be imported into the CSMS, and upon successful activation, establishses an OCPP connection that enables it to communicate with the platform and be managed remotely online.

What is the difference between OCPP and OCPI?

OCPP allows your charger to communicate with your network, while OCPI allows your charger to communicate with other networks.

How do I export reports?

Reports can be exported from the ‘reports’ tab on the Control Panel. Reports are available for up to 6 months after date. To retrieve a past account statement more than 6 months from date, please put in a request by clicking here.

What are the brands of chargers your CSMS can integrate with?

We can integrate with any hardware that is OCPP compliant.

Which OCPI version does Eigen's CSMS support?

Eigen currently supports version 2.1 and is able to Pull and Push roaming data with other networks.
